The Year 6 to 7 transition program at Brunswick Secondary College works on two levels. First, we assist our new Year 7 students to feel welcome, confident and known as individuals in their new school. To this end, we reduce the number of teachers Year 7 have so that teachers and students know one another well. We give students a home room in which they have all of their non-specialist classes and provide them with special areas that they ‘own’ in the school. The Year 9 Mates offer ongoing guidance for Year 7 students. Social evenings, pastoral and house activities, excursions and a Year 7 camp further support students’ social transition to secondary school. On another level, we value the previous learning that new Year 7 students bring with them from their primary schools. The Year 7 students are given opportunities for leadership within a range of areas including music, sport, dance, public speaking and debating, school involvement, (ICT) Information Communication Technologies, school publications, year level assemblies, school events and the environment collective. We recognise that Year 6 students have had significant responsibility at primary school. We therefore actively create opportunities for them to become confident members of, and responsible leaders in their new school environment. Year 7 students study a core curriculum of English, Mathematics, Humanities( SOSE), Science, Art/Graphics and Sport. Year 7 students also choose one three period specialist subject. There is increasing choice of subjects as students progress from year to year. To view a pdf of the year 7 elective program click here Highlights of Year 7 include the annual Thinking Games Day, Ancient Egypt Mummification and Funeral, and Impro Sports House Carnival. |
