I love being part of something as meaningful as the environmental collective. It's really exciting when you consider the great potential that we as a group and school community can have in improving the College's environmental awareness and sustainability. Mikaela - Year 9

I was surprised and elated when I heard that I had won a Swannie Award. These awards are given to the best speaker from each grade in debating. At Brunswick we are given really fanatastic debating opportunities including workshops and competitions. Debating has helped me become more confident in speaking to large groups and with essays, presentations and my general approach to studying and thinking about issues. Holly, Year 10
I have been involved in the Rock Eisteddfod for two years now. IN 2007, Brunswick won the Premier Division, In 2008, we were lucky to come 3rd. The Rock Eisteddfod days have been the best days of my life. This year we are performing in the Raw Division but will go back to Premier Division next year.

I got chosen to coach for the Year 7 Soccer team. The boys had big expectations of me but I soon eased into the role. On Sports Day I was nervous but also excited. I was thrilled my team got into the final which we won with an exciting goal with only two minutes to go. We all sang the Melbourne Victory chant at the end. Josh- Year 8

As part of the ALP (Applied Learning Program), my English class had to complete a project on student directed learning. I chose to do my project on landscaping. I was excited to learn more about this topic, the techniquest that are used and the processes for creating garden designs. I designed a garden for my teacher, Alison Sanza. It was good fun to use Google Sketch to create the garden.Ismail Year 10
The Italy trip last year was really good. It showed me how to cope without my parents help and be more self sufficient. I enjoyed all the day trips, all the amazing places we stayed, and also learning about another culture. I was lucky enough to be able to extend the trip by staying with family members at the end. Rocco,Year 10
After the Black Saturday Bushfires, the Brunswick Secondary College felt the need to help the schools nearest to us. We had a Black Clothes Day where students donated a gold coin or more to the cause. We raised over $7,000. This was a great achievement that brought pride to our school community. Annalivia - Year 11
I chose to do Work Experience in the area of Criminal Law. I worked with a barrister studying criminal law at a law firm. He let me analyse some cases. I also visited the Magistrates Court, the County Court, Appeals Court, Supeme Court and the Supreme Court library. This experience has made me eager work in Law in the future. John - Year 10
In the Year 9 Bushwhacked class, I completed my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award. To achieve this I played tennis for my physical recreation, reading as my skill, and helped out at my local tennis club for my service. It was a great experience, especially the camps. I highly recommend it. Hassan, Year 10

| University of Melbourne Mentor Program |
|
The University of Melbourne Mentor Program offers an opportunity for students to pursue an area of study that really interests them and be supported by a PhD student mentor. Eleven Brunswick Secondary College Students have participated in the program over the past seven years. Read about Nuwi Rodrigo, 2007 Mentor Program participant Student Research Projects I've always been fascinated by the laws of Physics while James has been interested in the solar sytem and Victoria in Victorian Gothic literature. Having a mentor is so valuable as it helps you to avoid false starts by modelling independence, motivation and the need for short and long term goals. When life seems to offer more opportunities than we can realistically consider, a mentor can offer counsel and advice. Nilay Yalcin 2002By participating in the mentoring program I got a chance to research an issue I am very passionate about, the ethics of stem cell research. My friend, Aubrey, researched Trojan Star Formations and Ellie made a short film about Human Rights focussed on children in immigration detention centres. As well as researching an interesting issue, being paired with a graduate student helps to point you in the right direction during research. Ultimately, it is a great experience to immerse yourself in an issue with this level of commitment and support. Andrew Thomas 2003My topic was Philosophy of Law and Ben's was Business Ethics. We presented our research to an audience of parents, teachers and other mentorees and their mentors. Shasta Fisher 2004My area of research was 20th Century music history. The program gave me insight into how people research at university level. It was a fantastic opporunity. All the other mentorees came from elite private schools and I think it would be a good thing for other government schools to be involved in the future. Jesse Marshall 2005The mentor program was a wonderful experience for both Joshua and me. My project was in puppetry and I was fortunate to be sponsored by a parent at the college to attend a Puppetry Conference in Tasmania during the time of my research. Josh researched in the area of ICT and design. Blaine Broomhall 2006To be able to choose a mentor and do a project of your desire was a great opportunity because I could benefit from it academically and have the honour of representing my school. The project involved us testing a well known sports drink and how effective it is on the average person during a 45 minute cycling session. We compared the sports drink to water and a placebo to see if there were any significant findings. We found that the sports drink has no effect on people during a 45 minutes cycling session, but only kicks in around 2 hours after consumption. It was satisfying to know that we did a full project and actually found interesting results. Nuwi Rodrigro 2007 |
