I was surprised and elated when I heard that I had won a Swannie Award. These awards are given to the best speaker from each grade in debating. At Brunswick we are given really fanatastic debating opportunities including workshops and competitions. Debating has helped me become more confident in speaking to large groups and with essays, presentations and my general approach to studying and thinking about issues. Holly, Year 10

Over the past week, I have participated in a unit called Student Directed Curricullum. We developed our own topics and had to create assessment tasks based on skills we wanted to develop. I chose Home Designs and Model Building. I created a model house on Google Sketch-Up. The presentation was a great success and I got praise from every teacher. Nathan, Year 10
After the Black Saturday Bushfires, the Brunswick Secondary College felt the need to help the schools nearest to us. | Debating |
BSC is very proud of its debating achievements over recent years. In 2006 and in 2007 we entered teams in the Debaters’ Association of Victoria (DAV) Schools Competition for Years 9-12. Our teams have had some great successes including making it to the Quarter Finals of the State competition two years in a row. Other teams have finished the Coburg regional competition with only one or two losses for the whole season. Every year, our debating program expands with more teams entered at more year levels and in 2008 we are hoping to have at least one team entered into the competition at each Year level from Years 9-12. In 2007, two of our students won Swannie Awards. A Swannie Award is given to the student in each region and each grade that achieves the highest overall speaker score during the year’s competition. Blaine Broomhall won a Swannie Award for the B-Grade competition (Year 11) and Alex Penman won a Swannie for the C-Grade competition (Year 10). This is an outstanding achievement. BSC also enters teams in the DAV’s Junior Secondary Program (for Years 7 and 8) and hosts the competition for the region. Again, in this division, our teams have done exceptionally well and have learnt a lot about how to think on their feet, research topics, argue points and write a well-structured speech.
